THE ORIGINAL SIN

Just before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, there was hoo-ha from the opposition parties in protest against the issuing of party ticket by the BJP to terror accused Pragya Singh Thakur to contest the parliamentary elections. Nevertheless, not only was she granted the ticket but she also defeated the heavyweight Digvijaya Singh of the Congress Party with a margin of 364,822 votes. Currently, she is the MP from Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.

This peculiar and controversial character has been in the headlines many a times for reasons obvious to everyone. A prime accused in the 2008 Malegaon bomb blast case which killed six people. She is on trial facing multiple charges under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. She is now out on bail on health grounds. Pragya Singh Thakur is the same person who said that Hemant Karkare died in the 2008 Mumbai attacks because no she cursed him for treating her badly in jail after her arrest in 2008 blasts. Ironically, she is also the only cancer survivor who survived from drinking cow urine!

Her candidature sparked rows of controversy. And while many of the Indian news channels could not muster the courage to question the BJP on taking the despicable decision to field a terror accused to contest elections. A British journalist Mehdi Hasan in an interview on Al Jazeera’s Upfront with BJP Spokesperson Nalin Kohli left no stones unturned to grill the BJP Spokesperson.

On November 21, 2019 in a move which caught everyone by surprise, the Modi led BJP Government made Pragya Thakur a part of the 21 member Parliamentary Consultative Committee on defense headed by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. This unseemly move was severely criticised by the opposition parties which termed it as ‘Unfortunate’. Shortly after her elevation, Pragya Thakur had the audacity to call Nathuram Godse, the very person who shot dead the father of the nation a patriot. That too inside the Parliament! Facing the mounting pressure from the opposition parties, the BJP took no time to remove her from the Parliamentary Committee on defense and also debarred her from BJP Parliamentary party meetings.

But this isn’t the first instance where she glorified independent India’s first terrorist. She had made similar statement while on her campaign trail on May 16, 2019. She categorically stated “Nathuram Godse deshbakht the, hai, aur rahenge. Unko atankwadi kehne wale log swayam ke girebaan main jhank kar dekhe. Abke chunav main unhe jawab de diya jayega’( Nathuram Godse was a patriot and will remain so. People calling him a terrorist should introspect. They will be given a befitting reply in these elections). The very next day, Mr. Modi told a TV Channel during his last rally that he can never forgive Pragya Thakur for insulting Mahatma Gandhi and that her comments were detrimental to society. But so much has happened since then. And not a single action has been taken against her till date.

Both Modi and Pragya are loyal foot soldiers of the Sangh Parivar. And it would be folly to think that the Modi Government will banish her from the party despite repeated offenses. After all, Pragya Singh Thakur was the favourite pick of Mr. Modi and that was the original sin.

On Recent Political Developments in Nagaland

T he NDPP has no relevance in Nagaland politics except that it is in power presently. It was born out of political necessity to reinstall the then Lok Sabha MP from Nagaland Mr. Rio back in to the state politics. If one can remember correctly Mr. Rio left the state in 2014 shortly a year after winning his consecutive third term as CM of Nagaland to make his debut in the national politics. Unlike the 2019 Lok Sabha election in Nagaland which was a very tight contest between the ruling government and the opposition Congress, Mr. Rio back then won with a comfortable margin of over 4 lakh votes. He was sent off with much grandiosity. Much hype was generated and the talk was in the air that Mr. Rio would be given Cabinet berth in the Modi 1.0 government. Rio could boast of his credentials as the lone seasoned politician from NER and also the Convenor of NERPF(Northeast Regional Political Forum). His speech in the Central Hall of Parliament on May 20, 2014 added a bonus point to it.  Acc...

THE TWIN EVIL

W hen the USSR disintegrated in 1991 marking the end of the feud of two antagonistic blocs- the US and the USSR. There emerged two schools of thought. Francis Fukuyama, an American Political Scientist advanced his theory that there is literally no threat to the United States of America post-cold war through his publication ‘The End of History and the Last Man’  which was an expansion of his earlier publication ‘The End of History?’. Starting from the end of the Cold war till the Twin Tower attack; this era is often considered as the ‘Era of Uncertainty’ for the US Foreign Policy. He further opined that the fall of Communism in Central and Eastern Europe and the disintegration of the USSR has contributed to the triumph of Western Liberal Democracy as the sole Political Ideology and the ultimate form of Government. The other school of thought was led by Samuel P. Huntington, another renowned American Political Scientist who in his famous publication ‘The Clash of Civilizations’ arg...

Kato And The Demonitisation

K ato was a poor farmer who could hardly make both ends meet. He had not been feeling well for a couple of days and so that day he decided to take off from going to the field and instead work in his small yard where he had planned to grow spinach. He was looking forward to earn some cash through this venture. No sooner had he started his work, a convoy of vehicles with red and blue beacons echoing back and forth whizzed near his house. The police then immediately swarmed the entire area within no time. He thought to himself what he might have done that the police have come to arrest him. He literally had no idea what this fuss was all about. He started to sweat from head to toe out of fear. He remembered having a brawl with his friend the other night but this couldn’t be the reason, he thought. Just then, a man well-clad in suits came out of the white SUV. Kato tried hard to remember the man’s face but he couldn’t. He was struck with awe and before he could say anything, ...
